How to Highlight Your Hair at Home


Today if you go to a particular salon, you can spend up to $ 100 - $ 250 dollars for a full head of highlights. It is no wonder then that so many women who are trying to do it themselves at home.


By doing highlights the strategic placement can give stunning results. It can make you look younger and more radiant. Highlights can create dimensions, and create the look of the hair looks and feels more solid.

The most essential step in home highlighting is picking the right shade. "If you have darker hair, you want to choose a more neutral color. If you have medium-toned hair, you can go a little lighter, maybe even golden or sun-kissed," says Gibson.

The rule of thumb when selecting a shade: one to two shades lighter than your natural base color is always a safe bet.

Placement of the highlight is equally as important. "When you're highlighting, always think about what feature you want to bring out and highlight it," says Gibson. "If you have bangs, highlight them so that you bring emphasis to your eyes. If you have a little bit longer bang, or a side sweep, make sure to highlight in the front so it can bring out the cheek bone," he adds.

  • Use conditioner, shampoo and styling products designed specifically for colored hair to keep your hair healthy and retain the color. 

  • For the best developing and color do not shampoo your hair the day you highlight. The natural oils in your hair will help protect it from the chemical process and keep it healthy and shiny.

  • For a natural, sun-kissed look, apply the highlights to the top layer of hair only.

  • Read the instructions on the box carefully. Not all at-home highlighting kits are the same, and they require different processing application techniques and times. Conduct the suggested strand test to determine the exact processing time for your hair.
