How to Color Long Hair at Home

Color Long Hair at Home
Long hair coloring is more difficult than short hair coloring, but it still can be done at home. It is helpful to have a friend at home who can help. Very difficult to paint the back and sides of your hair, so ask your friends to do so.
Whether it is the first time or the tenth time, here are some tips on coloring long hair at home without damaging your hair.

Instructions

  • Select the color that is right for you. If it is your first time, pick a color not so far away from your original hair color in order to be safe, preferably 2 shades away from your natural hair color (minimize mistakes and makes ugly root growth less noticeable).

  • Wear a ratty old shirt you do NOT like. Use the provided protective gloves. Have paper towels nearby to deal with spills. Also have a bath towel you DON'T love, best if it is dark in color (assuming you are dying your hair a dark color), to use to dry your hair after you rinse the dye out - because even if you rinse the dye out thoroughly, some may get on the towel.
  • Before applying dye to hair, do the allergy and strand tests. These are the most important and most often skipped steps to achieving professional and natural looking hair color. Ignoring these crucial steps can result in severe chemical burns or serious infection and embarrassing green hair; both of which require expensive and time-consuming professional attention to correct.
  • Apply your hair color according to the enclosed instructions. Start at your roots and comb the color almost to your ends. Young hair is lighter on the tips then at the roots; wait until the last 5 minutes to pull your color through to your ends. Wrap your hair with a towel warmed in the microwave and cover it with a plastic cap to penetrate stubborn gray more thoroughly. Add those highlights they make your eyes look brighter and give your hair color a contemporary and professional finish.
  • Extend the life of your hair color by keeping shampooing to a minimum and using products formulated for chemically treated hair when your do shampoo. Flaunt your revitalized look and revel in knowing the pro that did your fabulous hair color is you.

Tips & Warnings

With highlights less is more; start slow. Follow the package directions Start 1/4 inch from the front and add four or five streaks, spaced 1/2 inch to 3/8 inches apart, on both sides of your face.

A tablespoon of olive oil added to your highlighter for smoother more even color application, and a couple drops of grapefruit or orange oil added to your conditioner seals that healthy shine.

Skipping the strand and allergy tests can have painful and expensive consequences; carefully perform both tests according to hair color manufacturer’s directions.

Do not shampoo for at least 24 hours after coloring.
